Axpona, the East Coast’s premier high performance audio show, set for April 14-17 in Atlanta, will include the first demonstrations of the new AIX “3D Music Albums” heard through state-of-the-art audio equipment, according to Mark Waldrep, Ph. D., founder and chief engineer of AIX Records. AIX Records had a celebrated demonstration of High Definition Audio/Video on standard Blu-ray discs at AXPONA 2010 and has just completed shooting several music video albums in state-of-the-art 3D video and high definition audio that will be released in the new Blu-ray 3D format. The three days of recording/shooting will result in albums from Rita Coolidge, Mark Chestnutt, James Walker, Free Flight and others. Dr. Waldrep conceived and produced these sessions, which he says, “are not concerts with thousands of screaming fans, but intimate, private performances that can be experienced over and over in your own home theater.” The music performances were captured using uncompressed PCM at 96 kHz/24 bits PCM and the video was recorded at 1080p/30 and will be made compatible with Blu-ray 3D at 1080p 23.98 fps
Connected TVs Shipments Surge, With Forecasted Growth to 119…
The TV market is entering a new phase, as connected TVs hit the mainstream. According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly TV Design and Features Report , internet connectivity has emerged as a key feature in TVs this year. The report, which surveyed 2010 product ranges from leading brands, notes that 55% of TV models available across Japan, North America, Europe, China and India have Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) capability. Overall, this is expected to translate to over 45 million connected TV sets, 19% of flat panel TV shipments in 2010. DisplaySearch forecasts the connected segment to reach 119 million units in 2014, accounting for 42% of all TVs shipped worldwide. “We have seen DLNA as a solution in search of a problem for a long while, but with the surge in media streaming, the technology has found its place—creating business opportunities for TV set makers, broadcasters and retailers,” said Paul Gray , Director of TV Electronics Research. “The internet video battleground will take place in the living room, with all facets of the TV supply chain trying to stake claims. As a result, the competition is creating attractive new viewing choices for consumers, which underpins the value of the TV’s network connection.” DisplaySearch research also covers the progress made in the development of energy efficient TVs, as well as enabling technologies such as LED backlights, which are forecast to be in over 80% of LCD TVs shipped in 2014.
Key Component Shortages Limiting Growth of LED Backlit TVs
The LED backlight unit has emerged as a key factor in the TFT LCD industry, and is expected to maintain its growth momentum for the next several years. According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly LED Backlight Report , LED backlight shipments will pass those of CCFL backlights in all large-area TFT LCD panels and achieve 80% penetration in Q4’12. There is no doubt that LED will be the mainstream light source in all LCD applications due to slim design, low power consumption and the fact that it enables high display performance. This represents an opportunity for display materials suppliers. For example, optical polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) used in light guide plates, white polyester (PET) for reflector film, and sapphire for LED wafer substrates.
