Sharp eliminates the wires from your HDTV
With so many different wireless technologies around today, there is still one place that way too many cords are found, and that’s behind your TV. For some people, they have multiple gaming consoles, home theater receivers, cable TV and more running back there. Well Sharp has finally stepped up to the plate and created a device for their high-end TVs that will eliminate all but your power cord. The wireless standard that makes this possible is WHDI (Wireless High Definition Interface). This allows HDMI signals to be transmitted in full 1080p, so there is no loss of quality. All of your TV inputs are routed through the box you see above, and then transmitted to the TV without any extra work. The box itself can be positioned up to 100 feet away, allowing you to keep all of your home theater equipment safely tucked away somewhere out of the way. Of course you’ll need to have deep pockets if you want to go wireless. The WHDI add-on is going to set you back around $800 extra on top of the already steep $4,000 price tag of the Sharp X-Series HDTV. Sony unveils 0.3mm thick OLED display
While I’ve managed to finally rid my entire house of CRT monitors (with as many monitors as I have, it seemed like quite an accomplishment when I did) I still haven’t upgraded to a flat-screen TV. I’m hoping to pick up a nice LCD TV in the next few months, however, even it would look gargantuan when compared to this latest OLED display from Sony. This screen is by far the thinnest ever created, measuring in at just 0.3mm thick. It’s really hard to comprehend a number that small, so here’s an exercise for you. Go to your printer and grab three sheets of paper. Now stack them on top of each other and hold them up, that’s roughly the same thickness as this display. Crazy, no? What’s really amazing is that Sony was being praised last year for unveiling the thinnest display, which measured in at 3mm thick. That’s a lot of fat trimming in just a year’s time. Unfortunately we can’t expect to see these on the market for at least another 2-3 years. Source: Boy Genius Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames , check out our analysiss. Toshiba SpursEngine SE1000 image processor ships
Toshiba has begun to ship its SpursEngine SE1000 image processor – while that might not ring a bell with you, it is actually a similar processor that is found in your PS3, which also translates to having this images processor offering superior performance where MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC/H.265 hardware encoding/decoding is concerned. Samples have already started to ship, and Toshiba is pretty optimistic about sales, projecting around half a dozen million units moved within the first three years of the SpursEngine’s release. Here’s an excerpt from the press release :- SpursEngine is a co-processor that integrates a hardware codec for Full HD encoding and decoding of MPEG-2 and H.264 streams with four SPEs derived from Cell/B.E. These advanced processing elements offer high performance media streaming capabilities, with a clock frequency of 1.5GHz, while achieving low power consumption range of 10W to 20W. Yoshio Masubuchi, Director of Toshiba’s System LSI Division mentioned, “We are very pleased to have started sample shipping of SpursEngine. The design of this powerful co-processor is dedicated to bringing the advanced capabilities of the Cell/B.E.™ to consumer electronics, particularly video processing in digital consumer products. We are sure that SpursEngine will accelerate the market for full-HD applications.” Toshiba will be offering support for developers who are currently working hard on SpursEngine applications, assisting them with a comprehensive reference kit that consists of a reference board and essential middleware APIs. The reference board itself comes with a PCI-Express edge connector which can be hooked up to an x1 layer slot in a PC. Toshiba won’t be stopping there though, providing an integrated development environment (SPE compiler, SPE debugger, and performance monitor) and sample applications in order to show the way on using the provided middleware. I wonder when will the first notebooks and desktops feature this new processor? Source: Akihabaranews Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames , check out our analysiss.
